| Welcome
to the website of Sau Po Centre on Ageing. In this website,
you will be informed how our Centre responds to ageing issues
in Hong Kong, Greater China and the global communities through
the use of different strategies and with the cooperation of
local and international academic institutes, researchers, professionals
and policy analysts.
The
21st century will see a dramatic increase in the elderly population
worldwide, the growth rate being the fastest in China and
several other Asian countries. For example, it is projected
that the proportion of those aged 65 and over in Hong Kong
will rise markedly, from 11% in 2001 to 24% in 2031. Over
half of the world's older people live in Asia by 2025, with
such demographic changes, along with changing societal values
and family structures, will have profound effects on all segments
of our societies, especially in terms of social and economic
development.
