Director’s Message

Through global, cross‑disciplinary partnerships, we translate innovation into real‑world solutions that adapt dynamically to the challenges of ageing. Harnessing AI and Big Data, we embrace the full lifespan—driving research, compassion, and change in Hong Kong and beyond.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Sau Po Centre on Ageing (COA) has been a pioneer in social gerontological research and education since the late 1990s, when Hong Kong began transitioning into an ageing society. Since then, CoA has grown into a leading research agency under the Faculty of Social Sciences, HKU, and has gained recognition throughout Asia and worldwide.

Today, we stand at the forefront of adopting innovative technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data, recognizing their transformative potential in caregiving and ageing research. By leveraging these advanced tools, CoA is committed to enhancing the quality of life for older adults and alleviating the increasing pressures on caregivers through the development of evidence-based, empowerment-oriented, family-focused, and culturally sensitive interventions.

Our dedication to innovation is matched by our pursuit of international collaboration, especially with partners from Chinese Mainland and around the globe. Through these partnerships, we aim to advance cross-disciplinary research, foster knowledge exchange, and implement practical solutions that address the multifaceted needs of ageing populations and their caregivers.
To empower change on a grand scale, CoA works together with researchers, educators, community leaders, policymakers, and students from over twenty disciplines. Together, we strive to develop research breakthroughs and translate them into changes in individual behaviors, health and social care interventions, and policy practices. By combining AI and Big Data analytics with the real-world experiences of diverse collaborators, we aim to produce actionable insights that can make a difference to society and humanity.

We believe ageing must be embraced from a lifespan perspective. With our passion for enhancing the quality of life and care for both older adults and their caregivers, we are prepared not only to meet but also to proactively adapt to the complex and dynamic ageing landscape of Hong Kong and beyond.
Thank you.

Sincerely
Vivian W. Q. Lou
