Recently, I received a gift card from a caregiver participating in the Jockey Club Carer Space Project. As we spoke, she shared that the research initiatives led by the Sau Po Centre on Ageing have made a meaningful difference in her caregiving journey, offering her strength and reassurance amid daily challenges. Particularly, she expressed that gaining knowledge about caregiving have made her feel more capable and confident in caring for her disabled partner. Meanwhile, participating in group activities provided her with a supportive environment to share experiences, connect with others facing similar challenges, and gain social support. This sense of community helped her feel less isolated and more empowered to navigate her caregiving role.
Her words of appreciation reaffirmed that the power of social science research lies in its ability to create positive impacts, foster hope, and empower individuals and communities. Interacting with caregivers like her inspires me to approach my work with greater empathy and a deeper commitment to make a difference.
